I’ve searched and searched, my God

For answers

I’ve begged and begged, my Lord

For truth

I’ve tried to shoehorn understanding

My mind is but a mote compared to you

Do the birds see it clearer, Lord?

Their untroubled cruise devoid of mental toil

Or is my leap of faith

From turmoil into grace

The freedom that you didn’t want to spoil?

Sitting in my tabernacle,
sheltered from the truth
Grief and strife, a way of life
Morally aloof

You stood outside my tabernacle,
there you’d always been
Kind, forbearing, patient, caring
Author of the scene

Repentance came at cost to me,
but how much more to you?
A wretch like me, to finally see
The promises were true

Oh God don’t let me wave away
your purchase from above
For through your flood, and by your blood
Come righteousness and love

To make them rest together, Lord
and conquer all decay
I see how, it’s clear now
This was the only way

Help me Lord to choose you every time
Kill my idle whims at their stem
Don’t let me take my eyes off your love
To polish stones and disregard the gem

Shape me Lord and bathe me in your Word
Cast away my ego to the sand
Bind my will to yours forever more
Help my selfish heart to understand

Forgive me Lord, I let my head be turned
By bits of foil glistening in the sun
Don’t let my heart forget where I belong
And the priceless blood that says the work is done
